Lamb’s rock to mookumalai
Lamb’s Rock, on the way to Dolphin’s Norse, is 5.5 km. from Upper Coonoor and 8 km. from the railway station. Named for Col. Lamb who opened up a path to this place, this sheer precipice of several hundred feet rises straight up from the Coooor Ravine and has a splendid view of the plains. A popular picnic spot, the climb to the top is under shady trees where even the hottest sun leaves you cool. Before or after the climb, you can drink steaming hot masala tea, ‘five star tea’ as the shop boy calls it. He will act as your guide if you want, but it is not really necessary. To the right of Lamb’s Rock is the Hulikal Droog, also known as the Bagasuran Kottai, described in detail later. Directly below is the mountain railway from Mettupalayam. From this height it certainly looks like a toy. Since the town bus to Adderley leaves after 4.45 p.m. it is not practical to take the bus to Lamb’s Rock
Lady canning’s Seat, about 8 km. from Coonoor, is between Lamb’s Rock and Dolphin’s Nose. It is named for the wife of the then Viceroy who loved the place and stayed in the hotel built on eh edge of the ravine in 1858. She used to ride, walk, sketch and study botany. It has a small summerhouse and some beautiful views of Lamb’s Rock, Hulikal Droog and Lampton’s Peak (in Coimatore district) one above the other. The buses to Dolphin’s Nose go past this place
The road to Dolphin’s Nose goes through tea estates with tea bushes on either side. Perfect ingredients for a film song- narrow, winding roads, coifured tea bushes, mist filled valleys below and bright sunshine above, you can play- act your dream sequences here. With a knowledgeable guide, get vicarious pleasure pretending to be a picker, sing and dance like your favourite hero and heroine, run and fight like the villains and stuntmen. The Nilgiris is a popular locale for shooting films, especially the songs, because of the picturesque backdrops. It is very often less expensive to bring stars and crew here than to shoot in the studios
Dolphin’s Nose or Mookumalai (mooku- nose and malai- mountain in Tamil) is a popular sightseeing place 12 km. from the Coonoor railway station. A promontory over the Kotagiri valley from where the Catherine Falls (which is a splendid waterfall or a small trickle depending on how much rain has fallen), and the Coonoor and Kotagiri streams merging to form the Bhavani River can be seen. There is a free telescope through which you can see the falls and the viewpoint on the Kotagiri side. This nose can be seen very prominently from the plains. It has to be seen from there or from across the valley (Kotagiri view- point) because here ypu are actually standing on the nose and so cannot see it. The town bus at 7,8,9 and 11 a.m., 1.15, 3 and 4.15 p.m. to Singara and Adderley stops within walking distance of Dolphin’s Nose
These three places can be reached by different roads, from Brooklands, from Attadi near Sim’s Park on the Kotagiri road or past the General Post Office. The roads join at the Christian Mission Service
